The Model 5 Grenade was developed to provide a non-toxic screening, wind speed indication, and signaling device for infantry and other ground or maritime forces. The Model Five is a top fused, bottom ejecting continuous emission smoke grenade designed to take advantage of Argus' advances in materials science and electronic fusing developed originally for the Model 6 Grenade. The Model 5 like its predecessor the Model 6 uses the same low profile electronically ignited fuse in order to provide the highest environmental insensitivity regardless of temperature, climate or altitude.
Made of 7475 Aluminum alloy the body of the model five is a departure from most of Argus' product line, the high burn temperature of the NT smoke compound making the use of polymers an undesirable prospect. However the aluminum alloys excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and light weight make it an ideal replacement. The aluminum alloy body and a lack few ferrous metallic components in fusing, combined with NT compounds long shelf life reduce degradation or oxidation in the field and secondary toxicity concerns for transport and storage personnel dramatically. The Model 5 is waterproof to twenty meters due to resin sealed bottom ports and fully hardened electronic components in the fuse in order to prevent water intrusion. and designed to float emitter-end upwards for use in rescue and signalling operations in Maritime use due to a reinforced air hollow in the lower rim. The reinforced air hollow also allows for the Model five to be projected from a specially adapted shotgun or rifle up to ninety meters (using a blank cartridge) for use in riot or other military or civilian law enforcement activities.
The bottom of the model five is arranged with a hollow cone which once the grenade begins burning the heat melts a resin seal and gas pressure forces the cone outwards, unsealing an internal vent and allowing the smoke to exit through the emitter ports along the bottom of the grenade. The distortion of the cone provides a visual and tactile (once cool) indicator that the grenade has been used, and cannot be confused with an unused device. Emission from the sealed ports along the bottom of the grenade means that the grenade does not have to burst or separate to provide its payload. Because of this it produces no Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and can therefore be used safely from helicopters or on air fields for indication of wind direction. The dimensions of the grenade fit easily into a dual magazine pouch for most assault rifles and therefore do not require specialist pouches to be fitted to a soldiers load bearing equipment. The proximal taper on the bottom of the grenade body makes insertion into the pouch easier than a traditional flat bottom smoke grenades, and its slim form means less chance of catching on the seams. Though this may seem like a small concerned, without these features it (like most smoke grenades) would require a specialized pouch for carry.
The polymerized NT smoke material is constructed as hollow cylinder with a tapering star pattern along the inside to provide an initial large volume of smoke to instantly obscure the target area, than a more controlled burn for sustained cover regardless of weather conditions. The NT compound produces a smoke that has a very high TOP or Total Obscuring Power so is not as reliant as HC or FS based smoke grenades on environmental factors such as temperature, humidity or wind to provide ideal obfuscation. The colored smoke used in the Model 5 is produced from non-toxic organic dyes added to the NT compound and is fully biodegradable after settling. This means that it can be used in combat or training without the need of special protection or clean up after the fact. The Nico Pyrotechnik developed NT smoke material has higher storage life than comparable HC smokes with less irritant issues to nearby troops and is ideal for use with the insensitive electrical igniter used by the Model 5.
With High Visibility and Screening properties in either traditional White or Special Purpose colored smoke, the Model 5 is reliable, long lasting and most importantly safe to use whenever needed. Due to its bottom emission and non-separating design, secondary incendiary effects of the Model five are reduced, but not eliminated, and care should be taken (as with any pyrotechnic device) when used in potentially flammable environments.
Because of its high capacity, low profile, and flexibility in fusing the Model Five has spawned a number of Special Purpose variants ranging from mundane crowd control grenades to high end covert destruction devices. Though fuses may be changed, or bodies modified for ideal usage almost all variants undergo very similar construction and assembly processes usually up to 70% commonality in parts and methods. Reducing production costs even on highly specialized munitions. Body dimensions (length, diameter, general external profile) on all Model Five Grenades are equal, though their capacity, weights, filling material, and material properties may change depending on role.
Continuous Output CS grenade (M5-CS)-
Developed for use by Civilian or Military Law Enforcement, the Model 5 Chemical Grenade is designed for patrol and anti-riot forces to disperse violent crowds in urban environments. Because of its instant area coverage with continued persistent release it is able to produce a large area saturation with a minimum number of required munitions. CS causes general disorientation by inducing a burning sensation in the eyes and throat causing involuntary closing of the eyes, violent coughing, and shortness of breath. Because the gas is effected by wind conditions, operators should always wear protective equipment when using the M5-CS grenade.

Incendiary Grenade, Special Purpose (M5-IS)-
The Model Five Incendiary Grenade is filled with a Mixture of thermite and other materials to form a compound called thermate, which is capable of producing extreme temperatures and incendiary effects. The extreme heat generated by the filler is capable of melting or igniting almost any material it encounters. Most commonly these grenades are designed to destroy enemy equipment or to protect intelligence material from enemy capture. It is capable of damaging or destroying reinforced equipment such as aircraft, light armored vehicles, generators, and military computer systems. The grenade may also be used to start fires in areas containing flammable materials. The thermate filler includes its own oxidizer and is capable of burning in vacuum or under water, and is exceptionally difficult to extinguish. Despite its high heat the effect of the grenade is very acute and careful placement of the munition is required for best results.

Shaped Charge, Special Purpose (M5-SP)-
Whereas the Model 5 Incendiary grenade was designed to destroy light skinned vehicles and enemy hardware through heat, the Model five shaped Charge Special Purpose was designed to destroy heavy machinery by means of penetration and spalling. Equipment such as industrial gearboxes, transformers, bearings, gears, shafts or reinforced pipelines are all potential targets as they allow for disabling the target equipment without being forced to destroy it. The shaped charge rest in the upper third of the grenade body, with the rest of its length being used as a standoff to generate the best penetration and after penetration effects within a compact package.Though not designed for general issue to most infantry, the Model Five Special Purpose Grenade can be highly useful in the hands of special forces or intelligence agents operating behind enemy lines.

Non-Explosive Diversionary Device (M5-FB)-
The Flash Bang Version of the Model five series is perhaps the only model that does not use the most common M8 or M9 fuses. Instead it uses the variant specific M10 Timed High Capacity fuse. This special fuse uses a large non-perforated thick-walled central bronze tube that has a small primer charge at the top of the tube, and the rest is filled with a flaked aluminum composition. The body of the Model five is the slightly different than most of the Model five series and has a solid bottom instead of the inverted cone. Because of this difference both the body and the M10 fuse are completely reusable. Upon ignition the primer charge ignites and forces the flaked aluminum out of the fuse well and through the perforations at the bottom of the aluminum body. The aluminum flakes ignite as they are being forced out at extreme pressure producing a very loud report and painfully bright flash to disable nearby combatants without the threat of any produced fragments. Because it is refillable; realistic training can be performed with the grenade with a reduced or full power charge as the instructor may see fit. Though the grenade produces no fragments it still uses an incendiary composition it has the same fire hazard as a traditional flash bang, and should be used with care near potentially flammable materials.
